Thanksgiving Day 2019. Run for Pie 5k

It had been a while sine I had done a 5k. At least 2 years ago. I know in February I had done the Princess Disney half marathon in Walt Disney World. I didn’t finish. But, made in 10 miles. I still had fun and proud of myself for even trying!

I’m not sure how many 5ks I have actually done, maybe 5 or 6, but I know I have never done any under 45 minutes. Or at least any that I can remember. If I did, it has been a long time. So, on a whim, I went ahead and sign-up for the 5k on thanksgiving. I have bene training for Everesting 29029. So, let me see where I am at.

Waking up Thanksgiving morning, it was freezing and very windy. 30-40mph. The 5k was only $25. I could have easily just said EFF IT and go back to bed. Was I thinking it… HELL YES!!!!. I threw on a few layers of clothes and went and picked up my sister-in law Mary. When I got to the house I started stretching and was a bit tight. I was secretly hoping she would say, to forget this, it's too cold and windy. But, she didn’t. So, on we went to Glasgow park in the cold and wind. For some people, it probably wasn’t that cold, but adding in the wind, it took your breath away.

Mary and I lined up, and we took off. I’m not going to lie, I was a bit nervous. I’m not sure why. But I was. I was having a hard time loosening up. My hips tightened up about a half a mile in. I told Mary to go ahead and I would meet her at the finish. I stated to do a walk run. Made it a mile. Still tight. Finally, about mile 2 I started to warm up. My L hip was a bit sore, but my feet were doing great! (I have been having R foot pain for over a year, so this was a big deal to not have foot pain!!!!). From mile 2 on, was my best mile for sure. One of my mentors Jesse Itzler always says to “Finish Like a Champion!” I heard his voice over and over in my head the last mile. I was so happy to cross the finish line!!! It felt sooo Good! Once you cross you get a text message of your time and pace. I couldn’t believe it! 41 minutes!!! Under 45 minutes!!

While I am not breaking any speed records, I put one foot in front of the other! I DIDN’T QUIT! I finished like a champion!

Why do I write these blogs??? Because I’m just like most, I struggle with food, and consistent working out, and getting enough sleep and finding a good work/family balance. I want to set an example to my daughter. You can accomplish anything you put your mind to. Don’t quit! If you don’t finish something, regroup and try again.
